Description
The Memorial Stadium Restoration was completed in 1999 for Kern Community College District. The existing stadium was built in 1956 with concrete
when the technology for salt erosion was not known. Over the years, the stadium has deteriorated to the point that if it was not restored, it
would have to removed. Our firm prepared a detailed report of the conditions and cost for corrective measures including a seismic retrofit. The
college district had no funds for repair, and alternative methods were researched. The goal was how could this stadium be saved for use by future
generations. A maintenance assessment district was established. $6,500,000 was raised, and the repairs and restoration were started.
The program included the following:
" Seismic retrofit
" Replacement of wood seating with aluminum,
" Addition of theatre seating
" Signage systems
" Landscaping/irrigation, including field and surrounding areas
" Replacement of college logo with EIFS logo
" On-grade/above grade concrete repair/replacement and coating,
" Disabled seating
" Concession and restroom upgrades and restoration
" Hardscape area at stadium entries
The bright red seating and metal frame accent was used to accentuate the structure elements. A courtyard was created where to the north was an
asphalt area. This was developed to have monumental space using grass, trees, raised planters and hardscape. This is the first impression users
get when they come to the stadium. The use of recycled materials was important, rather than just replacing being done. For example the chain-link
fencing was corroded. It was treated and coated. The turnstiles where rebuilt, polished and powder coated.
