BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE

ALLIED HEALTH

Area: 15,000-sf
Cost: $2,500,000
Two-story facility

Description

The Allied Health Facility was completed in 1997 for the Kern Community College District. The 15,000-sf two-story facility cost $2,500,000 to construct with $800,000 for furnishings and equipment. The Program included replacing the existing facility off campus. Considerable time was spent with staff to develop a program and concept for this project. The program included an allied health program for the nursing vocation.

The architecture matches the early 1950 bunker style prevalent on the campus. We, as architects, could have done any style we chose, but we felt the continuity of elements is important to preserve a campus integrity--especially as this wing attached to the existing wing constructed over 40 years ago. This facility has become the keystone impression to this college as you enter the campus from the east and must reflect what is beyond this facility. The overhangs create shade in the hot summer, coverage from the rains and offers an expression order in courtyard setting looking from the south. Spaces have been allowed for students needing quiet space, as well as ceremonial spaces, been created by the location of this building. The building uses the natural topography to its advantage by creating a layering of elements. The use of natural lighting in the spaces between the buildings create an open, airy feeling.
